It’s both

> Sent from my iPhone.

I agree. It's both an ad and a useful signal of where the code came from or how it was created.

Just like the default iPhone email signature, it's an ad and a hint that the author was typing with their thumbs, so it's probably a brief auto-corrected message for that reason.

The iPhone analogy is very apt and accurate: it's ~95% advertising and ~5% useful signal.

Which for my repositories means I want ~95% less of it in my commit history. I'm prepared to round up for simplicity. But to each their own.

of course you don’t wanna go through somebody else’s orifice

"the most personal computer"

I don’t know, but it’s kind of boring to speculate since computers easily beat us at chess and go.

Preventing computer-based cheating in competitive chess is a big deal (and I assume go also), because spectators tend not to want to watch two computers playing against each other.

The reason you want to enforce a culture of collaboration is because that’s how you bubble up the smart people. The alternative is gatekeeping and cronyism.

Thank you for your service. Hopefully something like this can put pressure on airlines to understand how hostile their internet services are and that it matters.

Last year I flew roundtrip to the Philippines on Philippines Airlines. Each way they claimed they had internet and each time, they sent an email reneging the day before the flight.

The same thing happened when my sister-in-law flew with them a couple months earlier.

These are long flights during which I expected to be able to work. Just so infuriating.

That's frustrating. It's possible their link was down for some reason - airline maintenance issues happen all the time. :(

My aunt is 80 and thank goodness she has an iPhone. She’s bedridden and spends all day on it. She has no children but I lived with her for a while when I moved out of my parent’s, and we text often.

Someone bedridden is not the focus of the article or conversation; once you are no longer capable of being active, it is obviously true that you’ll partake in more sedentary activities.

The concern is what you're doing when you're getting older but still able.

The decline is accelerated by muscle weakness which is accelerated by sitting around all day looking at screens.

How do you envision the castaways made a bad impression? It's not like every band of explorers immediately tries to open a Walmart or something.

My guess is that the dominant society anywhere will make you pay for not knowing their culture.

Neal Stephenson wrote a book about Vikings discovering a Wal-Mart via time travel, and boy do they like it.

Sold! Thank you for pressing the order button on my next book ;)

I think the comment about newcomers bringing diseases that killed many of their people would explain why they don't welcome outsiders.

Now two isolated systems have to fail. Redundancy is fault tolerant. Nothing is fault proof.
